General Manager Update - November

November 2023 - what a month!

As I write, I am reflecting on a series of stellar events that genuinely cement what it means to be a professional strata manager and indeed, a member of SCAQ.

SCAQ kicked off November with our 2023 Leadership Retreat that focused on the value proposition, and considered the opportunities that lay in strata management if we look beyond strata administration. One of the biggest challenges we face in strata is the commoditisation of our service offering to the market. There were some tough conversations but through that emerged some new thinking; the kind of thinking that transforms businesses and sectors. We intend to keep the momentum of this thinking going and give our strata leaders more opportunities to develop in this space and meet the current and future needs of the bodies corporate we serve. Stay tuned.

Following Leadership was the marquee event on our calendar - the 2023 Queensland Strata Community Awards for Excellence. Oh what a night!! The industry came together to celebrate excellence in our sector and with over 70 entries into the Awards program, there was plenty to be proud of. The depth we have in our ranks in Queensland bodes well for the State, particularly with the growth in lots heading our way. It was pleasing to see the Attorney General and Minister for Justice and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, the Hon Yvette D'Ath MP in attendance, along with Shadow Attorney General Tim Nicholls.

We also had our 40th Annual General Meeting of Strata Community Association (Qld) on 23 November 2023 and had some 35% of the membership actively participating in the election process. We welcome new and re-elected Board members Duncan Lee, Sue Cubbin, George Salloum, Julie MacCarthy and Andrew Suttie. I'm looking forward to working with them.

I also would like to pay homage to retiring Board members - Tyson Pratt, Shane Devenish and Jonathan Flannery. I feel very privileged to have worked with such a supportive, collegiate and strategic bunch. Their contribution has been immense and the value of their counsel immeasurable.

On top of these events, SCAQ was also delivering our education program (including the A100) and we had major strata reforms announced and delivered a webinar on the same.

And now we are well into planning for 2024...which is set to be even bigger! Our Annual Conference in March is well into planning as is our education calendar for 2024.
